Sunnah 161: The du’a of laylat al-qadr

August 6, 2012

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Aisha (ra) asked the Prophet (pbuh): “O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?” He said: ‘Say:

اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhib al-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anny

O Allah, You the One who pardons, and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’ [Bukhari]

Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Qadr) is anticipated as being in one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan. It is most likely in the odd nights, and this is according to the saying of the Prophet (pbuh) [found in Bukhari].

This du’a is beautiful and different because we do not simply ask Allah for ‘magfira’ (forgiveness). Maghfira is a covering up of the sin, so Allah covers up your sin and forgives you, inshAllah. This could mean that on the Day of Judgment, you have a mountain of sins, but Allah says to you “I have forgiven you”.

But ‘afw (pardoning) linguistically refers to the erasure of something, such that even the traces of its existence are removed. So what does this mean for us? This night is so great that we ask for ‘afw- our slate is wiped clean. It is as if we never committed the sin, not even the Angels remember it, and you do not see the sin on the Day of Judgment. Allah will not ask you about it. So let’s start on a new page by pleading for ‘afw!

    Bismihi ta’Ala – as salaam alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu

    Praise be to Allah for bringing the most excellent success (Alhamdulillâhi alâ husni tawfeeqi) I ask Him for(As’aluhu) guidance to follow His Path (hidâyata ilâ suluki-t tariqihi), inspiration to verify His Reality (wa ilhâman alâ tahqiqihi) and a heart certain of the Truth (wa qalban muqinan ila taşdeeqihi). Allah, I take refuge in You from any speech that creates confusion (Allâhumma inni a’udžu bika min qowlin yujibu hiratan) or [that causes] discord(ow ya’qibu fitnatan) or which sows doubt (ow yuhimu shub’hatan) for it is from You that all words are received(minka tutalaqqi-l kalim) and it is from You that all wisdoms are obtained (wa anka yu’khathu-l hikam) and the [true] place of every creature is [total] incapacity  (wa kullu makhluqin mahalluhu-l ajzi) standing in true humility (fi mowqi’fith-thulli) before the door of Exalted Glory (alâ bâbi-l izzi) for everything is Allâh’s everything (fa la kullu kullu’Llâh) and the Command is Allâh’s Command (wal amru amru’Llâh) and the mystery is  Allâh’s mystery (wa seeru seeru’Llâh) nothingness is my being (adamiy wujoodi) and my being is nothingness (wa wujoodi adamiy) and the Reality is Allâh’s Reality (wal haqqu haqqu’Llâh) and the placing is Allâh’s placing (wal jâ’lu jâ’lu’Llâh) and there is no god but Allâh (wa la illâha il’Allâh) and Allâh is the Manifest Truth (w’Allâhu huwal Haqq’ul Mubeen)

    We are EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY grateful for the time, effort & intention you devote to promoting the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger sal’Allahu alayhi wa sallam & we do not wish our comment to me misconstrued but we could not help but notice that the Arabic text in this most recently published summah does not coincide with the purported English language translation that accompanies it.

    Meanwhile, we thank you again for your efforts & concern & bearing in mind that “This is a month, the first part of which brings Allah’s Mercy, the middle of which brings Allah’s forgiveness and the last part of which brings emancipation from hellfire” (Sahih Al-Bukhari); we ask Allah, Great and Glorious, who is Pure Beneficence (yå Nåfi’), All-Compassionate (yå Rahmån) and  Sheer Mercy (yå Rahim), to look on you with the eye of compassion and concern (bi ayni-r rahmati wa-l inâyati) and give you tranquility and dignity (sakinata wal waqâr) and I ask Allah

    ·        who is the Close Friend and Patron (yå Waliy), the Supremely High(yå ‘Aliy) to invest you with His close friendship, protective care and keeping, and flawless wholesomeness, through the utmost provision, favour and support of thålika min fadhwli-llåh [That is of the grace of Allåh(Q 12:38)]

    ·        who is the All-Preserving Guardian (yå Hafidh), the one to Whom all things are Entrusted (yå Wakeel), to preserve you from in front of you and from behind you, on your right and on your left, above you and below you, through the ever-present, witnessing, assembling hosts of lahu mu’aqqibåtun min bayni yadayhi wa min khalfihi, yahfadthûnahu min amri-llåh [He has attendant angels, before him and behind him, watching over him by the command of Allåh(Quran 13:11)];

    ·        who Suffices in every need (yå Kåfi), who Restores [to Wholesomeness] (yå Shåfi) to suffice you against [all] afflictions and ills, through the great benefit and lesson in low anzalnå hadha-l-qur’åna ‘alå jabalin la-ra’aytahu khåshi’an mutasaddi’an min khashyati-llåh [If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, reduced to rubble out of the fear of Allåh (Quran 59:21)];

    ·        who is the Most Subtly Benevolent (yå Latifu), the Supremely Kind who establishes True Welfare (yå Ra’ûf) to send down upon your heart, faith, tranquility and peaceful calm, and make you one of al-lathina åmanû wa’tatma’innu qulûbuhum bi-dhikri-llåh [Those who have faith and whose hearts are at peace in the remembrance of Allåh  (Quran 13:28)];

     and I ask Him through the sacred sanctity of all His Names, His Verses and His Words, to give you an authoritative strength from His Presence that brings you success; a bountiful livelihood and a joyful heart. Aameen.

    And Allah’s Peace and Blessing on our master Muhammad sal’Allahu layhi wa sallam and on all his family and companions (wa sal’Allahu alâ sayyidinâ Muhammadin sal’Allahu layhi wa sallam wa alâ âlihi wa sâhbihi ajma’in) and I ask Allah to bless Muhammad sal’Allahu layhi wa sallam with the constant, subsistent, divine and Lordly blessing through everlasting eternity without beginning or end (wa as-aluka an tusalli alâ sayyidinâ Muhammadin sal’Allahu layhi wa sallam salâtan abadiyyatan daymumiyyatan ilâhiyyatan).

    Glory to the Lord of Eminent Might, Incomparable in His Exaltation, far beyond all that they ascribe to Him (Subhânaka Rabbi-l izzati ammâ yasifun) and peace on the Messengers (wa salâmun alal mursalin) and Praises to the Lord of all the worlds (wal’ hamdu lillahi Rabb’il Âlameen). Aameen
