Sunnah 149: Virtues of Muharram

December 7, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah’ month of Muharram.” [Muslim]

Today is the first day of Muharram. Muharram is considered one of the four sacred months (Dhul-Hijjah, Dhul-Qi’dah and Rajab being the other 3). Allah says in Surat at-Tawbah:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…” [Surat at-Tawbah, 9:36]

Ibn `Abbas said regarding the above verse that these four months were singled out and made sacred. Sins in these months are more serious and good deeds bring a greater reward.
One of the best things to do this month is to fast. However, it was reported that the Prophet (pbuh) never fasted for a whole month except during Ramadan.
Happy fasting!
