Sunnah 142: Offer the udhiya

November 7, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) would offer the udhiya on the day of sacrifice [Bukhari]

The udhiya is the sacrifice offered on the three days of Eid. It is to commemorate the sacrifice offered by the Prophet Ibrahim (as). In pursuance to a command of Allah, he prepared himself to slaughter his beloved son Ismail (as), but Allah was testing him of his submission. He sent down a ram and saved his son from the fate of slaughter.

According to most, it is a confirmed sunnah to offer the udhiya for every male and female who can afford to do so. The meat is usually split into three portions; for oneself, for ones extended family and friends and for the needy. However, one can give all of to the poor and needy as well.

It is also permissible for those who cannot sacrifice the animal themselves to appoint someone else to do it on their behalf. [Source] Islamic Relief is offering the udhiya in many places where Muslims are in need, and you can donate here.

Also, if you are intending to offer the udhiya or appointing someone to do it on your behalf, you should refrain from cutting your hair or nails, as the Prophet (pbuh) said: “If the ten days start and one of you wants to sacrifice, then let him not cut or trim his hair or nails” [Muslim] Read more here.
