Sunnah 137: Be punctual

October 26, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Truly Muslims live by their commitments” [al-Albany]

Ever heard of Muslim Standard Time? Muslims often joke about always being late, that it is a ‘Muslim thing’ and laugh it off. However, this does a great disservice to the teachings of Islam and the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). Being late is not a Muslim thing- it is because we fail to live by our commitments. If we thought of our roles and how we project Islam to people, if we thought of time as something not to be wasted, and if we appreciated other people’s time, we would take being punctual more seriously. Do it because this is the way of the Prophet (pbuh). Can we imagine the Prophet (pbuh) starting every meeting late, and the sahaba (ra) coming to those meetings 10 or 15 minutes late saying “what can we do? we are Muslims”. Of course not. So how can we claim they are our role models when we cannot follow them in the simplest of things?

Islam is not solely in the grand gestures of justice and strength, but is how it is lived in the everyday and mundane.

Remember, in an amazing incident, the Prophet (pbuh) was supposed to meet with a man and that man forgot about the meeting. He remembered 3 days later, and the Prophet (pbuh) was in the exact place [Abu Dawud]. Why? Because the Prophet (pbuh) stuck by his commitments.
