Sunnah 133: Two rak’as before the obligatory prayers

October 17, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “There exists no obligatory prayer without there being, immediately preceding it, two voluntary units of prayer”. [Ibn Hibban]

We have discussed the sunnahs of praying two rak’as before maghrib and fajr, and four before asr. If we are able to, we can also pray two rak’as before ‘isha prayer. The Prophet (pbuh) also said: “Between every athan and iqaamah there is a prayer, for whoever pleases” [Tirmidhi]. By saying “for whoever pleases”, the Prophet (pbuh) is encouraging us to do so, but is not stressing this point. Scholars have differentiated between the type of sunnah, which is encouraged, and other types of sunnah prayers such as witr, which are stressed.
