Sunnah 128: When riding a vehicle

October 10, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

A companion of the Prophet (pbuh) said that whenever he would mount the camel to set out on a journey he would say:

بسم الله الحمدلله سبحان الذي سخر لنا هذا وما كنا له مقرنين وإنا الى ربنا لمنقلبون الحمدلله الحمدلله الحمدلله الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر سبحانك اللهم اني ظلمت نفسي فاغفر لي فإنه لا يغفر الذنوب الا أنت
“In the Name of Allah . Praise is to Allah . Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to You. O Allah, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins but You.”

Bismillaah , Alhamdu lillaah . Subhaanal-lathee sakhkhara lanaa haathaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa ‘innaa ‘ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon . Alhamdu lillaah, alhamdu lillaah, alhamdu lillaah, Allaahu ‘Akbar, Allaahu ‘Akbar, Allaahu ‘Akbar, subhaanakal-laahumma ‘innee dhalamtu nafsee faghfir lee, fa’innahu laa yaghfiruth-thunooba ‘illaa ‘Anta.

[Tirmidhi]

This du’s is to be said whenever we mount a vehicle or riding animal. Please note that there are some variations in the wording depending on the narration, and as long as one follows one which is correctly attributed to the Prophet (pbuh), this is ok inshAllah.

The following is a video with a recitation of the du’a:
