Sunnah 120: Seek knowledge

September 29, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Seeking knowledge is compulsory for every Muslim.” [Tabarani and others]

Seeking all kinds of beneficial knowledge is important. But here we referring to seeking religious knowledge. Seeking religious knowledge does not mean one is seeking to be a scholar- rather we want to be literate in our religion and grow closer to Allah.

Some knowledge is obligatory, such as how to pray. We must all know the correct way to pray, and there are many courses and books that teach us how to do this.

Once we have learned the obligatory knowledge, we should move to the realm of knowledge that helps us to understand our deen and brings us closer to God. This can include studying the seerah (biography) of the Prophet (pbuh), learning tafseer (exegesis) of the Qur’an and so on.

The best way is to attend courses and halaqas, as there is direct interaction between the student and the teacher. If that is not possible, there are numerous courses on the internet:

And if even that is not possible, we should at least attempt to learn something new per week by listening to a lecture or reading:

The Prophet (pbuh) also said:

“Whoever seeks out a path to acquire knowledge (of the deen), Allah makes easy a path for him to Jannah” [Muslim]
