Sunnah 114: Sponsor an orphan

September 22, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like these two” – and he gestured with his forefinger and middle finger, holding them apart. [Bukhari]

Some may wonder why today’s sunnah is something seemingly so grand; the sponsoring of an orphan. Yet these days, giving people has become so easy that we should regard it as incumbent upon us to try to fulfill this sunnah via the many means available to us.

There are many charities that take care of orphans, and one can sign up for a monthly donation:

Among many others..

Please note that monetary compensation is only one aspect of ‘sponsoring’ an orphan. The more comprehensive meaning, according to Ibn Atheer is that “The sponsor is the one who takes care of the orphan’s affairs and brings him up.” However, in the absence of that, this is a very worthy way to try and gain closeness to the Prophet (pbuh) in Paradise.
