Sunnah 109: Fast 6 days from Shawwal

September 11, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh): “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted the entire year.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah]

Shawwal is the month following Ramadan. One must NOT fast on the days of Eid as these are days of celebration. One may choose to fast them consecutively or separately. Read more here.

Also, if one has to make up days that he or she could not fast in Ramadan, it is better that they fast those days first, and then follow them with 6 days of Shawwal. According to some scholars, this is not obligatory, but better. You can read more here.

    Dear brother/ sister.

The hadith by the Prophet (pbuh) says: “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted a ”dahr”. Dahr means in arabic a thousand year not one year….

JazakiAllah khair for your comment. In Imam an-Nawawi’s explanation of the hadith, he stated that “dahr” means an entire year. Allah knows best.
