Eid Sunnahs

September 8, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Eid Mubarak! May Allah accept from us our deeds, forgive our shortcomings and enable us to continue in the spirit of Ramadan, amen!

As Eid approaches, let us continue the cycle of doing deeds for the sake of Allah by implementing the following sunnahs and virtuous acts:

1- Eat something after fajr: The Prophet (pbuh) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of  Eid al-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates and he would eat an odd number. [Bukhari]

2- Perform ghusl and wear your best clean clothes (keeping in line with Islamic etiquette): It is reported that Ibn Umar (ra) would perform ghusl before going to the prayer. [Muwatta]

Jabir (ra) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a Jubbah (cloak) that he would wear on `Eid and on Fridays.” Umar (ra) also gifted the Prophet (pbuh) with new clothes and said “Take it and adorn yourself with it during the Eid and when the delegations visit you” [Bukhari]

3- Engage in takbir (saying “Allahu akbar”). Takbir is recommended for males, females, young and old: The Prophet (pbuh) would engage in takbir from the moment he exited his house until he arrived at the prayer place. [sahih]

4- Walk to the mosque if you can. Ali (ra) stated that it is from the sunnah to walk to the place of worship for Eid prayer. [Tirmidhi- classed as hasan]

5- Pray the Eid prayer: This is an important sunnah of the day to be prayed in congregation. It is prayed after sunrise. Read more here.

Please note that it is encouraged for women and children to go as well. The Prophet (pbuh) would take his wives and daughters to the two `Eids [Ibn-Majah and Bayhaqi]. This is corroborated by Umm `Atiyyah’s report in Bukhari and Muslim.

6- Return from a different route to that which you came: On the Day of Eid the Prophet used to return (after offering the Eid prayer) through a way different from that by which he went. [Bukhari]

7- It is also important to make sure to pay Zakaat Al-Fitr before the prayer. The Prophet (pbuh) enjoined the payment of one Sa` of dates or one Sa` of barley as Zakat Al-Fitr on every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave. (Bukhari &Muslim)

Ideally, it should be given in advance so that the poor can enjoy their Eid. Zakaat al-Fitr is a special type of zakaat that is obligatory and is separate from the regular zakaat. Read more here and read the common mistakes people make here.

8- Wish every one the joy of Eid and ask Allah to accept their deeds by saying: “Taqabal Allahu Minna wa Minkum” (May Allah accept it from us and you). The companion Muhammad bin Ziyaad (ra) stated that the companions would do this. [Ahmad- with a good chain]

9- Be charitable: After the Eid prayer, the Prophet (pbuh) went towards the women along with Bilal (ra) and advised them to pay alms and so they started giving their earrings and necklaces (in charity). [Bukhari]

10- Enjoy the day: yes this is also a sunnah!

When the Prophet (pbuh) first came to Madina, they had two days in which they would celebrate and have fun. He asked them, “what are these two days?” They responded, “We used to have fun in those days in Jahiliya (pre-Islamic days)”. The Prophet (pbuh) responded, “Allah has given you two days which are better, and they are the days of Adha and the days of Fitr.” [Abu Dawud]
