Ramadan Sunnah 2: Say “I am fasting”

August 14, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “When any of you is fasting… [and] if anyone reviles him or quarrels with him, he should say ‘I am fasting’.” [Bukhari/Muslim]

The Prophet (pbuh), in the same hadith, described fasting as a shield, and that a fasting person should not raise his voice or indulge in obscene language. Thus if someone quarrels with us, we should remind ourselves and the person that we are fasting in order to prevent ourselves from responding and indulging in vain and potentially harmful talk.

The following article is beneficial to know the ruinations of the tongue.
