Sunnah 86: Feed people

July 19, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “O people, feed others… and you will enter Paradise in peace” [Tirmidhi]

Part of a longer hadith which states:

O people! Spread Salam (the greetings of peace), feed others (the poor and needy), be kind to your relatives, offer prayer when others are asleep, and (you will) enter Paradise in peace.”

Today we will focus on feeding people. In the West, if our city has a lot of homeless people, let us pack some food and distribute it to them. In many Arab countries, there are construction workers that work long hours in hot weather that we can distribute cold water and food to, or even go to a charity that does the job.

The Prophet (pbuh) told us to protect ourselves from the fire even if it were with giving half a date in charity. Aisha (ra) narrated that a woman came with her two daughters asking for some alms, and they did not have anything but one date, and gave that to the lady and her daughters [Bukhari]. Alhamdillah, many of us can afford to do more than that, so let be grateful for what we have by sharing it with others.

And let us also follow the example of Abu Bakr (ra), who had learned of a blind old lady living alone with no one to take care of her, and he would go to her house everyday to clean up her house and do her chores. Wherever we are, there are people who are in need, and sometimes those most need are not visible, so we should try to seek them out.
