Sunnah 71: Read Qur’an

June 30, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever reads one letter of Qur’an is given one blessing & one blessing is equal to tenfold the like thereof in its reward.” [Tirmidhi]

Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an: “…so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur’an” [Surat Al-Muzammil, 73:20] We should try to ensure that we have a daily portion of the Qur’an that we recite- for some of us this may be easier than for others which is why we should try to read in accordance to our ability. The Prophet (pbuh) also said: “He who is expert in reciting the Quran will be in the company of the honorable, obedient angels, while he who reads the Quran with difficulty shall have double reward” [Muslim]

Also, do not try to push yourself beyond your capability; of course you should try to always improve but do not do so to the extent that you are not able to and then end up giving up altogether. The Prophet (pbuh) told us: “The best of deeds are those that are done consistently even if they were few” [Bukhari] Thus, read a portion of the Qur’an everyday that you can be consistent with inshAllah.

If Arabic is not our first language, let us take the time to read a portion in Arabic and then its translation so we can ponder over the verses.
