Sunnah 69: Joke with someone to make them smile

June 28, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Anas (ra) says, “The Prophet (pbuh) used to associate with us and joke.” [Tirmidhi]

In another narration, it has been prohibited to joke. Imam Nawawi has compared the two and said that excessive joking which will result in the heart becoming hard, will keep one away from the remembrance of Allah, may become a means of troubling a Muslim or that which may lessen the dignity and degrade one. This is what is included in the prohibition. If joking is to appease or make someone happy, then it is mustahab [recommended]. Abdullah ibn Haarith (ra) said, “I have not seen anyone who makes a person more cheerful than the Prophet (pbuh).”
