Sunnah 55: Cut your nails

June 14, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

“Five things are part of one’s Fitra…” and the Prophet (pbuh) mentioned that trimming the nails is one of them. [Muslim]

In a hadith by Imam Muslim, the Prophet (pbuh) stated that we should not leave the acts of Fitra [natural disposition] for more than 40 days, as that is a lack of hygiene. We should try to keep our nails reasonably short at all times to prevent dirt from going underneath them.

Asalaamulaikum. Loving this blog! Keep it up, it’s very beneficial, may Allah reward you.

I was just wondering, there is a sunnah way to actually cut your nails isnt there? Could you do a post on that?
    JazakAllah khair

W alaikm isalam w rahmat Allah

JazakiAllah khair for your kind comment.

I do not have enough knowledge, but I believe the only thing agreed upon is to start from the right hand, because the Prophet (pbuh) would always start with his right. As for which fingers to start first, I am not sure because I have not found hadith that talk about this specifically. Some scholars have recommended certain sequences, but I did not know which opinion to take and so just left it 🙂

Perhaps if you have the hadith I can post it?
