Sunnah 47: Take care of your hair

June 5, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever has hair, let him take care of it.” [Abu Dawud]

It is very important in Islam to look tidy and clean. In this hadith specifically, the Prophet (pbuh) tells us to take care of our hair; meaning to comb and ensure it does not look scruffy. In one incident,  the Prophet (pbuh) was in the mosque, when a man with unkempt hair and an untidy beard came in. The Prophet (pbuh) pointed to him, as if indicating to him that he should tidy up his hair and beard. The man went and did so, then returned. The Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘Is this not better than that any one of you should come with unkempt hair, looking like the Shaytan?” [Muwatta] To read more on how the Prophet (pbuh) dressed, click here.
