Sunnah 23: Salaat at-Tawba

May 12, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever commits a sin, and then performs wudhu, then offers prayers seeking forgiveness of God, God will certainly forgive him.” After this the Prophet (pbuh) recited the verse:

“those who remember God and implore forgiveness for their sins if they do something shameful or wrong themselves- who forgives sins but God?- and who never knowingly persist in doing wrong.” (Surat Aal-Imran, 3:135) [Tirmidhi]

One should pray two or more rak’as, and after his prayer, raise his hand in supplication asking Allah sincerely to forgive him. InshAllah he will be forgiven. One should avoid praying this prayer at the disliked (makrooh) times, i.e. between ‘Asr and Maghrib, between Fajr and sunrise.
