Sunnah 21: After eating

May 10, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “God is pleased when one of His slaves  eats something and praises Him for it, or drinks something and praises Him for it” [Muslim]

What to say?

The Prophet (pbuh) would praise God in different ways after eating. I have listed two here; it is always good to alternate between them to ensure that we keep up the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh):

الحمدلله الذي أطعمنا وسقانا وجعلنا من المسلمين”

Al-hamdu li’Llahi’lladhi at’amana wa saqaana wa ja’alana min al-muslimeen

Praise be to Allah who fed us, gave us to drink and made us Muslims.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]

and

الحمدلله الذي أطعمني هذا الطعام، ورزقنيه من غير حول مني ولا قوة”

Al-hamdu li’Llahi’lladhi at’amani hadha’t-ta’aam, wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlin minni wala quwwa

Praise be to Allah who fed me this food and bestowed it upon me without any strength and ability on my part

Whoever recites this du’a, his past sins will be forgiven.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]
