Sunnah 4: Dhuha Prayer

April 19, 2010

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet (pbuh) said,

“In the morning, charity is due on every joint bone of the body… and two Rak`ah Duha prayers in the forenoon is equal to that.” [Muslim]

`Aishah (may God be pleased with her) also reported: “The Messenger of God (pbuh) used to perform four Rak`ah of Duha prayer (at the forenoon) and would add to them whatever Allah wished.” [Muslim]

How to perform the dhuha prayer?

The dhuha prayer is prayed in cycles of two rak’as. You can pray up to 8 rak’as (so either 2, 4, 6 or 8). As for the time, Sheikh Sayyed Sabiq states:

“The time for dhuha begins when the sun is about a spear’s length above the horizon and it continues until the sun reaches its meridian. It is preferred to delay it until the sun has risen high and the day has become hot.
Zayd ibn Arqam relates: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the people of Quba’, and they were performing Duha, and he said:’The Prayer of devotion should be observed when the young weaned camels feel the heat of the sun'” (Ahmad, Muslim, and At-Tirmidhi).
